Hearing loss and balance issues are complaints heard frequently in an acupuncture office, and all practitioners – and their office staff – eventually find themselves struggling to communicate with hearing-impaired or deaf clients.
In this class we will cover many problems involving the ears and Eustachian tube, including how the ear controls hearing and balance, types and causes of hearing loss, hearing aids and problems that may be encountered, and balance testing and treatment, including the Eppley maneuver. We will review medical conditions involving the ear, including tinnitus, infections, fluid collection, wax buildup, arthritis, hyperacuity, Meniere’s, vertigo, and others. In addition, we will discuss ear candling, tips on communicating with hearing-impaired and deaf clients, how hearing and balance are affected by structural problems in the head, neck, and shoulder girdle, and OM treatments for hearing and balance problems, including acupuncture, herbs, qi gong/tai qi, and body work.
Course Objectives
This course is open to all who wish to attend. Acupuncturists, physicians, and other health care practitioners will find the material particularly relevant to their practices, and are encouraged to bring their office staff and any clients who have an interest in problems involving the ears. The objectives of this course are to:
· Explain how the ear works in hearing and balance, and how the ear is affected by structural problems elsewhere in the body.
· Discuss types and causes of hearing loss.
· Discuss advantages and disadvantages of hearing aids, including who can benefit and who cannot.
· Discuss balance testing and treatment.
· Review medical conditions involving the ear, and OM treatments for these conditions.
· Offer suggestions for communicating more effectively with hearing-impaired and deaf clients.
